My project with this grant is going to deal with math and measurement. This standard is a weak standard for our district and statewide. I am going to try to incorporate measurement of length, capacity, weight and temperature.

Problem: Standard 2.M.M.6 which deals with measurement seems to be an area of weakness for students in our district.
Question: How can I implement 21st century skills to enhance the learning of this standard and to improve student achievement?

Use of Data: Our district does not administer the Dakota Step to students in grades K-2, so therefore my second graders do not take the standardized tests. Successmaker, which is an individualized computer program for grades K-6, engages students in reading and math for 30 minutes per day. Each child works at his own level and progresses through the math strands at his own pace. Teachers can view reports and determine which are areas of weakness for individuals as well as for the entire class. Measurement was a weak area for my class as a whole according to the Successmaker program. It seems there is a direct correlation between Successmaker scores and standardized test scores in grades 3-6 as well as student performance in the classroom.
I also looked at the EMetric site to assess our district scores at the third grade level and beyond for our district. Measurement was once again a weakness for our third grade students. After looking at the Successmaker data from second grade and the data from third grade Dakota Step, I determined that this would be a good standard to use for my project.

Sessions attended at ESA2:
  1. 10/09/08 Senteos
  2. 10/14/08 EMetric
  3. 11/15/08 SmartBoard K-2
  4. 11/18/08 Best Websites for Elem.
  5. 11/22/08 Formative Assessment
  6. 03/26/09 SmartBoard K-2

Process for carrying out my plan:
1. Check out Smartboard and Senteos from ESA office.
2. Go to Achievement Series and find test questions to match Standard 2M.M.6.
3. Create Senteo posttest and pretest.
4. Administer pretest to students not only in my section, but all three EPJ second grades.
5. Use Smartboard to enhance measurement unit.
6. Teach unit using district curriculum, CGI and 21st century skills.
7. Administer posttest to all three sections of second graders.
